Next Gig - RANGDA
Rangda is avant-garde guitarists Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls) and Ben Chasny (Six Organs Of Admittance) and renowned drummer Chris Corsano, three very seminal names in the US leftfield rock scene of the past two decades. Rangda "bridge the gap between Dick Dale and Omar Khorshid" (Chicago Reader) as new album The Heretic's Bargain (Drag City) testifies and their blazing live shows are of considerable repute.
2010 saw the arrival of this alt-rock supergroup with the planting of their False Flag album via Chicago’s great Drag City label. All had already garnered significant adulation individually: a short-lived collaboration with sibling Alan and Moe Tucker of the Velvet Underground led to the Bishop brothers joining forces with drummer Charles Gocher to form the legendary and ultra-prolific Sun City Girls, Bishop later adding the pre-fix ‘Sir’ and releasing his first solo album Salvador Kali via the great John Fahey’s Revenant label in 2005. Since then, a series of albums and sublime live shows have documented Bishop’s peerless playing, fired by his love of Django Reinhardt, Omar Khorshid, Middle Eastern culture and occult literature (by day, he’s also a rare book dealer). Ben Chasny’s fin de siècle emergence from the US freak folk underground as Six Organs Of Admittance evolved into a pile of great releases on labels such as Drag City, Holy Mountain and Tokyo’s revered P.S.F. alongside collaborations with Elisia Ambrogio (Magik Markers) and others and his ongoing membership of Comets On Fire. Chris Corsano has rightly been described as “one of the most exciting drummers on the planet” and spans the worlds of alt-rock, free jazz and more, having collaborated with the likes of Evan Parker, Jim O’Rourke, Joe McPhee, Nels Cline, Sunburned Hand Of The Man and, most famously, Björk, whose Volta album and world tour he graced. Corsano also appeared at the first TUSK Festival in 2011 in a raucous first-time throw down with Alan Bishop and Bill Orcutt.
Joining Rangda tonight are two great exponents of the UK alt-rock community, Bridget Hayden and Shareholder. Bridget is well-known as a member of Yorkshire free drone legends Vibracathedral Orchestra and later member of shoegaze droners The Telescopes. She's also released four solo albums since 2002 showcasing her deliriously imploding noise rock that, to our ears, recalls the sounds of Grouper, Michael "Dead C" Morley's Gate project and Belgian alt-blues monolith Ignatz. Shareholder are the Edinburgh trio that shares members with Muscletusk, who blew a hole in TUSK Festival 2012 and their gloriously despondent rock wail has been compared to Dead C, Vermonster, Crazy Horse and The Fall in slow motion. Hear their album Jimmy Shan on Bandcamp and Bridget's great A Siren Blares In A Different Ocean on the KRAAK label.
